Inmotion Web Hosting Customers Saying?

This is a note on the positive side of your quality focus. I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the excellent technical help I received recently related to "forms" on my domain deadernest.com. Adam, who assisted me, was very professional and effective in his work and helpful in his attitude. I appreciated it very much. He's another reason I'm happy for having signed up (In February) for Inmotion Hosting. As I have the opportunity, I'll be eager to spread the good word about your organization. Thanks again.

Inmotion's Launch package offers 4000 MB of storage space and 50 GB of monthly data transfer ability. Their email service is one of the best, with up to 200 spam free accounts with many email features available.

Although this service offer an exceptional email package, their limited bandwidth, lack of shopping cart and absence of extra subdomains with its basic package, places it behind the other products we reviewed.

Feature set:

Inmotion offers great email functionality; they include forwarding, webmail, aliases, auto responders, SMTP and catchall email everything that we were looking for in a quality email service. Customers have two choices for webmail—either SquirrelMail or Horde. Webmail allows users to access their email anywhere they have Internet access such as a hotel room or internet cafe without requiring a client to be logged in to a specific computer.

Inmotion Hosting supports PHP, Perl, C, C++, Javascript, SSI, FrontPage, and a CGI directory, but does not support ASP. The MySQL database is supported as a standard feature. Also included are CGI tools that can help you compose business correspondence. Inmotion provides a bulletin board, password protected directories and a guestbook with all of their packages.

However, the Inmotion Launch package only offers one FTP Account and does not support subdomains. The Launch package may be more suitable to a personal site than a business site, because they do not offer SSL or a shopping cart either.

Customer Service:

Inmotion Hosting has a reputation for excellent customer service from its qualified, friendly support staff. They offer a customer support center that includes a 24/7 support online and email. Inmotion's toll-free telephone support, however, is only available between 8:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. PST.

The Inmotion site offers a FAQ section and insightful Flash Tutorials. To address difficult inquiries, they post a customer bulletin board that lists advanced customer questions and responses by topic. The service also provides a complete user manual for the CPanel control panel.

Control Panel:

Inmotion Hosting uses CPanel, a popular control panel, used by many different Hosting companies. CPanel operates on a user-friendly interface with 35 different functions, including access to email, file and domain management as well as storage information, forums, search engine submits, website statistics, system security and several other options.

The statistics function runs with Webalizer, another common software application used by several Hosting companies. Webalizer gives you a clear picture of your site’s stats, including traffic, which countries (and hosts) visitors are from, which browsers and operating systems visitors utilize, which pages visitors land on and exit from and daily/hourly tracking.

Summary:

Overall, Inmotion Launch is a perfect choice for anyone that needs a low traffic site with an exceptional email service. They also support a quick and knowledgeable customer support and offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you need a faster site with more storage, they offer a Power and Pro package.

Netfirms Web Hosting Review

$4.95/mo Netfirms Plus Plan

$ 4.95 /month

6000 MB (6 GB) of Disk Space

300 GB Monthly Data Transfer

10 E-mail Accounts

1 MySQL Database

Netfirms Picture Pro Photo Gallery

FrontPage Exts. & PHP Scripting

24/7 Live Response Tech Team Support

Netfirms Web Hosting

Netfirms Plus Web Hosting plan includes everything you need to run and grow your active Personal or SOHO Website. If you're interested in getting up and running with your own website quickly, you've come to the right place. In four easy steps you'll be able to get your message out to the world!

Netfirms is a Canadian Web Hosting company that has a huge presence in the United States. They connect to some of the largest fiber optic networks which enables them to own one of the largest internet infrastructures in the United States. Thanks to its offering of free Web Hosting and its catering towards the business crowd, they grew exponentially in the past few years to become one of the largest internet Hosting companies.

Pricing and Value

Netfirms Web Hosting starts at $9.99 per month. They provide 500 MB of disk space and 10 GB of traffic. Although the features are weak compared to other Web Hosting companies, they are most than sufficient to be used for online businesses. For the price, you also get a free CD sent to your home with web development software. They provide twenty four hour live support and many advanced features for higher level Web Hosting clients. Unfortunately, at their price, the amount of traffic and disk space is very weak compared to our top ten Web Hosting companies.

Reliability

Netfirms operates one of the largest internet infrastructure, however, they still go down from time to time. Our test sites showed they went down at least twice per month, mostly due to network connectivity problems. Unfortunately, because of their size, when there were problems customer service representatives always told us to wait, because they didn’t have power to contact anyone to reboot a server or such. We also were disappointed that we were never compensated for all the downtime we experienced, which was a few hours when we last had a downtime.

Data Center

Netfirms operate one of the largest data centers. However, they seem to pack as much users to each server as possible. For instance, the server were were on seem to host thousands and thousands of users and we were the 200th user connected to the ftp server at the time of connection. Unless they are using powerful state-of-the-art servers, it’s never recommended to hold so many users onto one server because of security and performance issues.

Customer Service

Netfirms provide customer service when needed, however, the representatives sometimes had problems communicating with us and often times they have no power in assisting with downtime or server issues. They did assist us when we asked basic questions regarding our software, but for more complex questions, their answers were usually not in par with we were would expect for a Web Hosting company.

Conclusion

Overall, Netfirms is a satisfactory Web Hosting company if you need to use with your business. They provide all the basic tools and features to host a better website. However, you can find better value and more competent customer service elsewhere.

customers have to say about Hostrocket Web Hosting

We have never seen a full service like yours. Everything you do is aimed to let us do business in the easiest and fastest way possible. The manner you respond to any request is prompt and accurate, supporting our operations all the time. We feel that you are part of our business and we can operate with total confidence.

We are so positive about HostRocket Service that all companies that have a business site designed and developed by us, are hosted here and they share the same feelings.

HostRocket is a highly successful web-Hosting firm headquartered in Clifton Park, NY. Since its foundation in 1999, HostRocket has always had the goal of underscoring support, availability, technology and value. Owning their own datacenter allows HostRocket to provide you with unmatched reliability and uptime. Not being dependant on other companies to provide them with access to the servers makes hardware upgrades on the fly easy, and allows them to fix problems before they become problems for your customers.

HostRocket Web Hosting Features

HostRocket's most popular plan is its "ROCKETfreedom" plan, which for $9.95 a month, offers 5,000 MB of disk space and Unmetered bandwidth. The plan also features software support for PHP, MySQL, CGI-BIN, PERL, Sendmail and more. Again, this plan isn't the cheapest around but for the quality of service you get it is well worth it.

These plans are overpriced because if you really want more disk space, bandwidth, and MySQL databases, you are better off going with midPhase's Mega-PHASE package.

Host Rocket also offers dedicated servers from $89 a month.

HostRocket Control Panel - Host Rocket has created their own control panel that is very similar to CPanel. Like CPanel, the panel is highly categorized to make navigation easy and also has a number of graphics that might help the average beginner. Account information, site management, mail controls, statistics and logging, scripts and programs, and advanced options are all available in the panel to make it easy for you to manage your web site..

HostRocket Sitebuilder Online Demo -Simplify your life by using free web based site builder, available as a free option on all accounts. Your web sites will automatically be created with all the required images, including logos, buttons, and sidebars. The images will all be generated in the colors you, with the desired text you choose. Even professional quality rollover buttons are as simple as selecting a specific layout. You can see our online demo, or read on to find out how you can get SiteStudio for a free trial period on your server.

Customer Support

HostRocket is relatively speedy at replying to support tickets with an above average response time to support e-mails. Their technicians seem to be very experienced even for intermediate and advanced level topics. Similar to StartLogic, Host Rocket has a huge support section -- in fact they have created an entire site dedicated solely to supporting their customers.

24/7 Toll-Free Phone - HostRocket provides two 24/7 toll-free telephone numbers that you can call. For sales and billing matters, you can call their main line: 1-800-545-6737. For technical support, you can reach HostRocket at toll-free number: 1-800-545-6737. The above toll-free number available to US customers only. For International customers, you can call their main office at 1-518-371-3421 .

24/7 Signature Support - HostRocket offers 24/7 responsive email support to all the HostRocket customers. Their support ticket system allows you to track your problem status conveniently.

Live Chat - Similar to iPowerWeb, HostRocket also offers live chat which powered by 'LivePerson' where you can chat online with their support staffs on various issues.

HostRocket FAQ - Here, you can find HostRocket extensive answers to common questions in various categories.

Data Center

HostRocket operates a data center from Clifton Park, NY. The facility is over 10,000 square feet in size and has redundant OC-12 loops through TW Telecom. The facility is of course equipped with network security to prevent DOS and DDOS attacks, cooling, UPS battery backup for all equipment, a full diesel generator and on site staff. Host Rocket is connected to the Time Warner Telecommunications NationWide Fiber Network, as well as other carries like AT&T, Broadwing, MCI-Worldcom, Cell One, Global Crossing, Pae Tec and more.

Summary

HostRocket's most popular plan is its "ROCKETfreedom" plan, which for $9.95 a month, offers 5,000 MB of disk space and Unmetered bandwidth. Host Rocket also offers two other plans. Its "ROCKETdedicated" plan is coming soon. The only real difference about these plans is that they offer more disk space, bandwidth, and MySQL databases than the ROCKETfreedom plan.

Although HostRocket's ROCKETfreedom plan does not offer as much disk space as similar plans offered by other Web Hosting companies, it still should be sufficient for most web sites. Host Rocket also offers a 30-day-money-back guarantee, so if for any reason you are unsatisfied with their services you can demand a full refund. This should be a sufficient amount of time to tell if you are enjoying their services, providing that your web site has already been built and is ready to be uploaded. HostRocket has proven that their servers have consistent uptime, and that their support technicians are very knowledgeable on even advanced level topics. Host Rocket is an excellent choice if you are willing to pay a little bit more.

HostRocket User's Reviews:

"I've been Hosting our site with HostRocket for over 1 year. HostRocket offers a very professional service and their plans are tailored to your needs. Reliable service, good support, and definitely a host to get your money's worth. Host Rocket has a good customer service team that answers all your questions. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend HostRocket."

StartLogic Web Hosting

New Host 10 Domains in 1!

Overview

StartLogic is one of the leading providers of web hosting solutions and services for global business. Thousands of businesses, from all over the World, rely on our advanced, easy-to-use, reliable hosting solutions and award winning customer service to power their online presence.

StartLogic offers a full line of solutions for personal, business, government, and educational customers, including:

Hosting services for your Web site and other important data.

E-commerce solutions that enable your business to sell over the Internet.

Security measures to protect your information assets.

Applications that allow the Internet to make your business more productive.

General Impression of Startlogic

Do not be fooled by the dullness of Startlogic’s website. Even though the design may seem outdated, Startlogic is a new Web Hosting company that provides excellent customer support and a bundle of features for cheap. Unlike most Web Hosting companies which specialize in either UNIX or Windows, Startlogic have plans that fit both needs. Startlogic is unique in a sense that they offer 24 hour live technical support. You can contact a representative any time during the day or night and request assistance over the phone and not just through email. Furthermore, for $7.50 per month, they offer a free domain, 100 GB transfer and one of the best web development template website makers we have seen on the internet today. It just doesn’t get any better than this. Since Startlogic is relatively a new company, we decided not to give it our highest rating yet until they establish some reputation on the internet. It is said that Startlogic was founded by a large investor so you can be assured that it is a Hosting company that you can depend and rely on for years to come. Furthermore, the utilize the IPowerweb as one of their largest resellers. Besides Web Hosting, they also sell other great products at bargain base prices such as their dedicated servers.

Price and Cost Effectiveness

Startlogic’s UNIX Web Hosting starts at $7.50 with a one year prepayment which is cheaper than most other Web Hosting company. The average Hosting price by consensus Web Hosting company usually starts at $7.50 per month. With them providing a free domain and free setup with only an annual prepayment, we couldn’t find better bargains elsewhere. Since they are relatively a new company, they are willing to offer lower prices to attract a larger base of customers in order to gain market share in the ultra competitive Web Hosting industry. They also recently just upgraded to offer 5000 MB and 100 GB of traffic for the same low price. Thanks for the competitiveness of the industry, consumers benefit while Web Hosting companies lose margin. Startlogic is one of the few Web Hosting companies offering Windows Hosting, but at a much steeper price starting at $9.95 per year with 500 MB of space and 20 GB of traffic. On a positive note, they offer ASP. net support in their windows offering, which a lot of companies don’t. They also have Phpnuke preinstalled in their control panel to offer ease to customers who need Phpnuke installed, but lack any type of programming knowledge.

Reliability of Startlogic

Reliability is something missing from most Web Hosting companies. It’s not uncommon nowadays to see even the oldest companies going down because of their server getting hacked, power outage, or excessive maintenance. Startlogic however is one of the few companies that offer reliable Web Hosting that meets up to their 99.9% uptime standards. However, since Startlogic is a new company only time will tell if they are able to maintain their high standards of uptime. Startlogic is able to maintain its reputation for reliability with its data center located in Phoenix, AZ, which provides redundant optical fiber connections from Cox communications, Qwest, and ELI including Broadwing communications, UUNet and Global crossing. With so much redundancy, its no wonder that they are able to offer such high uptimes in their Web Hosting. In addition, their world-class data center is custom designed with raised floors, HVAC temperature control systems, redundant power, UPS back-up and power conditioning systems and generators.

Vdeck Control Panel

Startlogic currently uses its own proprietary control panel, very much similar to Ipowerweb’s. Their control panel is very unique since they seem to have customized it themselves. Many of the options in the control panel are unique and exclusive to Ipowerweb and Startlogic. Basically you can create websites, shopping carts, install scripts and even send and receive email all from the simple easy to use control panel. In addition, their control panel has one of the most intuitive interfaces we have seen in years. It is very easy to use and understand.

Startlogic is a great choice if you are seeking for a new Web Hosting company. Even though they are new, they seem to be light years ahead of many of the Web Hosting companies we have reviewed in their Vdeck control panel. Twenty four hour live support is a big plus that many companies do not offer today. However, we believe their customer service may need some help. If you are trying to seek for a web host that offers a lot of good stuff for a low cost, you do not need to look further. Startlogic is the answer.

Customer Service

Globat offers a comprehensive array of support options, such as email, support tickets (a method to index your past questions and resolutions in case of reoccurrence), live-chat and toll-free telephone support.

StartLogic Email Support - With StartLogic ticket support system you can submit your problem and managed online.

StartLogic Troubleshooter - Troubleshooters allow you to follow a series of questions to find a specific answer.

StartLogic Knowledgebase - The knowledgebase lists many frequently asked questions that are categorized which makes it easy for searching.

StartLogic Live Chat - The staff is also available for live chat support, his channel is the best way to get a hold of their support staff.

24/7 Toll-Free Phone - StartLogic provides 24/7 toll-free telephone technical support at their main line: 1-800-725-8064.

5 Features to Look For in Web Hosting

I develop web sites for friends and small businesses. I don’t provide hosting but I am always asked how to identify a good web hosting company. There are 5 “must have” features in quality web hosting. They are:

1. 24/7 live support. Phone support is the best option but it is a bonus to find a web hosting company that provides 24/7 live chat support along with phone support. Many times things you think are big issues can be resolved in a matter of minutes and it’s nice not to be on hold.

2. 30 day money back guarantee. If a company believes in its service and products, they will not be reluctant to offer a full money back guarantee. In fact, I would be skeptical of a company that doesn’t offer some kind of guarantee. Make sure that you read the details of the guarantee.

3. Windows and Linux hosting at comparable prices. Some hosting companies will offer both Linux and Windows web hosting but some will charge much more for one or the other. A good hosting company will rarely have more than a few dollars difference in the price of these options.

4. Shared SSL. This is absolutely necessary if you want any e-commerce capabilities. SSL is what provides your customers with a secure connection to enter credit card information, etc. Some hosting companies will charge for this but the good ones will always have shared SSL free of charge.

5. Free setup. Some companies will charge for setup. This charge is anywhere from $20-$50. This is such a bogus charge because most web hosting companies have this process completely automated and in many cases nothing manual has to be done. So in reality you are paying this charge for absolutely nothing!

Of course, there are many other important things to look for in web hosting but many of them really depend on your needs. It should be very easy to find a reputable web hosting company that offers these 5 things. Web hosting is a very saturated market which is great for the consumer. The key is to take your time. Don’t forget that many of these companies will register your domain name for free if you sign up for a hosting account with them.

Shared Web Hosting, Dedicated Servers And Virtual Private Servers

Many times those that are relatively new to web hosting terminology stumble into some confusion in their quest for a good web hosting plan. One of the major sources of this confusion may simply come down to what is what where web hosting plans are concerned.

In this article I will talk about three different types of web hosting and their differences. These types are shared web hosting, dedicated server hosting and virtual private server. They mostly vary wildly in price and altogether fill different needs as far as hosting plans are concerned.

Shared web hosting is a term used to refer to when a hosting company puts websites from many different users on one server. Every user is usually given some limit to the amount of resources their site is able to consume. When several sites on the same server get busy or a script on one site consumes extra resources the server can bog down, slowing your site.

Most shared hosting plans are very cost effective and if you get a good hosting company you may be able to avoid having your site bogged down by having too many users on one server. Many shared plans can be had for under $10 a month and come packed with features and possibly even free domain registrations.

Dedicated server hosting is the most expensive web hosting of the three. Instead of sharing a server with other users you are in effect renting an entire server for yourself. Usually, all of the resources of the server are at your disposal. Many times hosting companies give you several options for the type of server you can rent and the operating system it runs.

Dedicated servers are for either bigger sites or for the webmaster who has 200 web sites and is tired of paying for 200 shared hosting accounts. Shared or virtual private server hosting accounts usually can handle personal or small business sites.

A virtual private server in essence is a hybrid of a shared web hosting account and a dedicated server. Software on the server is able to break it down into multiple "virtual" servers. The effect is basically like having several servers on the same machine. You would be paying for one of these virtual servers.

Virtual servers allow you the flexibility of customizing your server settings as if you were renting a dedicated server but since you are actually sharing a server with other users you pay much less. Virtual private server plans are usually priced just a bit higher than shared web hosting.

When you search for hosting do whatever research you need to do to pick the plan that's right for you. There are thousands of sites offering quality information about web hosting that will help you to fill in any gaps in your knowledge and enable you to make the best possible decision.

Many hosting plans seem to offer the world on a string for a quarter. That's fine and all but what happens when they cram several hundred busy accounts on one server and your site loads 30kb of HTML in 10 minutes on a DSL connection?

There may actually be many different hosts that can be right for you. Whichever you pick will come down to your requirements for resources like bandwidth and storage space, your requirements for features like PHP and/or ASP, and your requirements for price and level of support. Have fun.

How to host several websites under one account

If you operate several websites, each with its own domain name, signing up of separate ...hosting accounts can be an expensive proposition. Even if your hosting company offers the add-on domain feature (which will allow you to add different domains to the same hosting account) you will be charged a monthly fee for each domain you add, sometimes costing almost the same as your full hosting fee.

The solution is to open a reseller account. Reseller accounts were created to allow web designers to offer hosting services to their customers, to create a one-stop-shop for all their web design and hosting needs. However, you don't need to be a reseller to buy a reseller hosting plan.

Reseller accounts are usually slightly more expensive than regular hosting accounts, but they will allow you to host different domain names without incurring in the add-on domain fees, making more efficient use of your space and bandwidth.

You want to choose a reseller account that offers:

no limit to the number of domains you can add.
the possibility of hosting your main website free, without using any of the space and bandwidth in your hosting plan. If you are a reseller, your main website will be your business website, and the space and bandwidth will be reserved for your customers. If you are not a reseller and just want to manage different websites, you can designate one of your domains as your main website (usually the largest and/or most popular, since you won't accrue any space or bandwidth for it).
the possibility of upgrading to another plan without any penalties or fees.
To find out how much space and bandwidth you will need, first determine how many sites you are likely to host, how many pages each site may have, and how many visits will those sites most likely have. If you plan to host 10 sites with 20 pages each, at an average of 50KB per page and 100 page views per site per day, you will need 10MB of space (10 x 20 x 50KB) and 1.5GB of bandwidth per month (10 x 100 x 50KB x 30).

As far as pricing is concerned, there are reseller accounts costing as little as $10 / month up to several hundreds (or even thousands). It all depends on your requirements and the hosting company you choose, so shop around to get the best possible deal in terms of cost and reliability.

Web Hosting: Which Is The Host With The Most?

Monday, February 27, 2006
So you want to publish a web site do you? Welcome to the club. These days it seems that almost everyone has a web site of some kind, and thousands more continue to be launched every day. It's challenging enough to design a site and fill it with interesting content, but when all is said and done another challenge still remains - where to host it?

A popular choice for newbie webmasters, and even experienced ones, is to secure a free hosting plan with a company such as Yahoo! Geocities, Tripod or Angelfire. While these are easy to setup and free of charge, they do have limitations. Most free hosts don't offer all the nice features that paid hosts do such as FTP access, CGI-BIN, or your own personal domain name. Instead you're stuck with minimal features and a generic URL such as www.freewebhost.com/marcswebsite. This somewhat limits your web site‘s potential. Most free hosts also require you to run banners or pop-up ads on your web site to make it worth their while - these banners and pop-ups can obstruct the view of your web page and ultimately annoy visitors and drive them away. Lastly, most free hosts have a daily bandwidth limit that is very small, so if you do get a lot of traffic you'll most likely exceed the allotted bandwidth and your site will be temporarily disabled. Overall I would recommend free web hosts for people that are new to web hosting and want to get a feel for how it works. I'd also recommend them for web sites that are personal in nature (such as an online journal) as well as web sites that don't plan to generate any revenue. Free web hosts are a great stepping stone to paid web hosts - I myself starting building web sites 4 years ago using free hosts, and today I run several high traffic web sites that are hosted on paid web hosting plans.

Now it's time to get into the good stuff - paid web hosting. Web hosting companies that charge money for their services are plentiful on the Internet, and feature a wide array of hosting packages at various price points. First we begin with so called "budget" web hosts, who claim to offer you the world for only $1 per month. Having used numerous such companies I feel I must tell you to proceed with caution here, as these companies aren't all that they are cracked up to be. Many claim to offer 24/7 e-mail support, which in my experience turned out to be 0/0 e-mail support. My e-mails were either never answered or answered a week after I sent them. Even when I got a response it was generic in nature and completely unhelpful. Also, expect frequent outages with these budget web hosts as they rarely even have their own web servers - often they are reselling space on someone else's web servers over which they have no control. One budget web host I used went down unexpectedly for 6 days, and they didn‘t even bother to notify their customers. As a result, my web site was down for 6 days and I lost most of my visitors as well as my hard-earned search engine rankings. Lesson learned: if the reliability and success of your web site is important to you, budget web hosting might not be the answer. However, this is not to say that all budget web hosts are bad - 1dollarhosting.com is one of the leaders in the budget web hosting arena and has quite a good reputation.

The next type of paid web host is what I refer to as a "mid-range" web host, meaning that they offer prices and service that will satisfy the majority of web sites out there. Mid-range web hosts like PowWeb, Your-Site.com and iPowerWeb offer packages ranging from $5 to $8 per month and provide the tools that most webmasters will need to run a web site, such as: CGI-BIN, tons of e-mail addresses, FTP support, visitor statistics and more. These hosts do have monthly bandwidth limits, but the limits are quite high, and most web sites will never reach them. However, if your web site features hundreds of file downloads and gets decent traffic you may be shocked at how soon you'll reach those bandwidth limits. When you do, your site may be temporarily shut down or you'll have to pay bandwidth overage charges, which can get pricey. Overall though, mid-range web hosts will be satisfactory for 90% of the web sites out there, and generally offer excellent uptime/reliability. In fact, many web-based businesses are successfully run using a mid-range web host. However, as mentioned previously, web sites that offer large files for download or sites that get a huge amount of traffic may find that a mid-range host doesn't quite suit their needs. These types of web sites may require "high-end" web hosting solutions, the next topic in our discussion.

High-end web hosts typically service web sites that are extremely popular, have a high amount of traffic, and/or require pretty much 100% uptime. Most businesses rely on high-end web hosts to host their web sites. Rackspace.com is an example of a well known high-end web hosting company. Pricing for high-end hosts varies, but typically runs from about $50 per month to several hundred dollars per month. Many high-end hosts give you your own dedicated server (which they support) that is reserved just for you and your web site. The mid-range hosts I discussed earlier typically host many different web sites on the same server - this is known as "shared" hosting. High-end web hosts offer stellar reliability, bandwidth, and just about every tool you'll ever need to run a successful web site. Another feature that some high-end web hosts provide is "co-location" hosting. In this scenario, YOU configure and provide the web server, but you get to plug it into their data center/network. This can be very nice because their data center usually has a fiber-optic connection directly to the Internet, offering blazing bandwidth and stellar reliability. People who run web-based businesses or extremely popular, high traffic web sites are good candidates for high-end web hosting.

Hopefully this brief overview gives you a good picture of the various types of web hosts that exist, and which one might be right for you. When you begin your search for a web host, always keep in mind the old adage "You get what you pay for" because it really does hold true in this case. Before you make the commitment to host a web site be sure to take some time and analyze what you want out of the web site, and decide which factors are most important to its success. Answering these questions will get you many steps closer to choosing the web host that's right for you.

Web Hosting Service - What you Need to Know to Change Web Hosting Providers

When service at your web hosting company is lacking, or your web site grows in traffic so much that you outgrow your current account, you may find yourself needing to change hosting providers. It can be scary to think about everything you need to do. Here are some things you should keep in mind that will help make the transition to the new host much easier.

1. Backup all of your files and databases

Before you decide to transfer anything over, you need to create a backup of every file and database you have on the current hosting provider's server. FTP into your current hosting account and copy all of the files from your public_html directory into a directory on your local hard drive that you'll find easy to remember later.

As for the database, backup methods will vary according to the database vendor, the control panel being used by the host if any, and the operating system of the server. Most providers provide a backup utility that allows you to save a copy of the contents of all of your database tables. If there isn't a simple backup utility available, you will need to export the contents of your database in a comma delimited file or the standard file format for the particular database you use. Most backup utilities will convert the database into one long SQL file that is then easy for any compatible database engine to reconstruct.

2. Transfering to the new server

Make sure that your website is functioning properly at the new location before you change the DNS information of your domain name. While it may not be possible to fully navigate the site without the domain name pointing to it, you can still point to some individual pages to be sure they will come up. For this though, you'll need to use the IP address of your hosting account along with your username if you have a shared IP address. On a Cpanel server, you would enter http://61.36.149.221/~username and your main website will come up. You can use this address until the DNS information from the domain propagates throughout the web.

3. Tidy up the loose ends

Upload the backup file of your databases or execute the SQL file you generated in the backup. This should restore your database back to what it was on the old server. Change the nameserver information for your domain name. This is almost always found with the registrar that you registered your domain with or with your old web hosting provider. They almost always assign you a username and password that allows you to log into an account that allows you to change the nameservers. If you don't have a control panel, then simply email the company that registered your domain for you and ask them to change the nameservers to the new servers. Within 24 to 48 hours, your website will be served from the new server and not the old one. Once you can confirm this, it is safe to ask the old web hosting company to delete and discontinue your old account.

Why Dedicated Hosting?

If you’re reading this article, you might be interested in getting a dedicated server, or simply learning more about dedicated hosting services.

First of all, please note, that a dedicated server is rather expensive service, and you shouldn’t waste your money if you don’t plan to use it in full measure.

But if you really have a serious website, and want to run a successful business - you cannot do it without a dedicated server.

Of course it’s just mere words, so let’s enumerate the facts!

Freedom and security

Dedicated server will give you a freedom. You will not need to share it with other websites. It will also give you additional 3rd party security for your site and emails. A dedicated server will allow you deep access to your server to configure and optimize your server anyway you need. You’re able to choose the software to install.

Power and functionality

With a dedicated server you get on average 50-100 Gb of hard drive, plus about 1,000 Gb of data transfer. You may customize the configuration and choose any CPU, RAM, or whatever you need. A dedicated server reduces your dependency on the web host; and bypasses time delays and possible expenses incurred from these.

Respectability

You simply CAN NOT run a popular website on a shared hosting. It’s not serious.

Summary

If your website turned into a popular and reliable resource; if you have tons of daily visitors; if you work B2B; if you need additional security and functionality, power and freedom - go ahead and buy a dedicated server. Don’t be sorry about the money you spent! Think about the future!

Great Web Hosting - What to Look For!

Web hosting can best be described as a modern-day marriage: none of this till death do us part stuff, it's more like I'll stick around as long as your uptime is 100%, you answer my frantic queries instantly, and you charge me less than a decent latte at Starbucks. What follows is a few tips to help make the relationship less rocky and possibly prosperous!

First of all, we all need to take a little responsibility and at least figure out what we think we need from a web host up front. This isn't always as easy as you might imagine. You don't always know your exact needs ahead of time, and sometimes these things are difficult to forsee. Your site may become hugely popular, requiring more bandwidth or storage than previously thought. You may decide to have data feeds hosted on your site, which will gobble up resources. On online store can do the same. One way I've found myself in the position of having to change web hosts is when a technology you want to use or implement on your site isn't supported by your host. This will (and did!)prompt a move.

Ask friends and associates who they use. While their needs may be somewhat different than yours, basic issues such as support and uptime will be evident, as will cutomner satisfaction. Check out several of the web hosting directories, as they maintain a wealth of current information regarding the specifics you're interested in. Come armed with a list of things you're looking for and narrow your choices down using this.

Make sure you can grow with this new host. Not only in the size of your current sites, but also number of domains and subdomains you can host there. If you're anything like me, I want to be able to get the most bang for my hosting buck!

In short, due your homework, check them out, do your part in knowing as specifically as possible what you're after, and make your choice. This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship!

Web Hosting in 2005 - Finding the Niche and Cashing in!

Web Hosting in 2005 --- Finding the Niche and Cashing in!

Over this past year, web hosting has grown to be the biggest it has ever been. With more companies appearing every day, the demand for web hosting has never been higher.

In 2005, web hosting will be even bigger.

It has been estimated that 38 million people will put their very first websites online in this next year. And, by 2008, the internet sales industry will top the 120 billion dollar mark.

What does this mean for you?

Finding the right web host for your application will be easier. Quality web hosting companies will separate themselves from the rest of the industry, and unprofessional web hosting companies will suffer. Support will become the number one factor for people when choosing a web host. Traditional advertising will become less and less effective, as most people will choose a web host based on colleague’s recommendations.

This is going to create a great opportunity for web hosting affiliates, and resellers. By simply referring people to hosting services, many people will be able to make full time income. They are doing it right now.

Think about it. Everyone who wants a web site needs a web hosting company to host it for them. Currently, there is no definitive hosting industry leader, and most people choose hosts based on recommendations.

If you are happy with your web host, check to see if they operate an affiliate program. Instead of paying them every month, or year, imagine them paying you? It can be as easy as putting a small “powered by” or “hosted by” link on the bottom of your page.

Why pay for web hosting if you don’t have to? Why not get paid to let people know you like your web host.

Remember when choosing a web host; choose one that has fantastic customer support. Look for hosting affiliate programs, or even RESIDUAL affiliate programs, which are programs that pay you a percentage every month for a client you refer, and allow you to build a steady income.

Choosing Your Web Hosting Package

General rule of thumb is not to sign up for yearly web hosting plans. Instead, get monthly plan where you can unsubscribe from on the second month when you are not happy with the service. That is, if you ended up with an unreliable web hosting company in the first place.

Here is a simple guide that can be easily applied to typical web sites:

--Web Space--

Expect a small website to take up 10 and 100 MB. Considering that you may want to expand your website in the near future, it is advisable to get a web hosting plan with ample web space.

Make sure that you know your needs before you start looking for your web host. Not every web hosting plan can be upgraded or customised. More than often, webmasters do not get the features they need and are not able to customise their web hosting features.

--Monthly Traffic--

Data transfer per month are typically referred to as bandwidth. It is the amount of data transfer that occurs between your website and visitors. A small or medium web site will consume between 1 and 5GB of data transfer per month. Larger, commercial or popular websites often consume more than 5GB of monthly data transfer and sometimes, exceeding 100GB of monthly data transfer.

Before you decide on a web hosting plan, be sure to check this:

- What is the monthly data transfer/ bandwidth allowed?

- Will you be charged if your website exceeds its limit?

- Are you able to upgrade/add on your bandwidth?

--Connection Speed--

Visitors to your web site will often connect via 56K modems or ADSL modems but your web host provider should have a much faster connection. Your website should have high web site connections that are approximately 1000 high speed (56 Kilobytes per second) modems combined- T3 fiber optic connections.

In the early days of the Internet, T1- connections was considered a fast connection. The fastest connections available are T3 connections that are used by Internet Service Providers and major corps.

A Simple Guide to Web Hosting

Personal Computers, Servers Or ISP?

You need a server to host your site so that it can be viewed over the internet. This server can either be an Internet Service Provider or of your own. Most websites are hosted by an Internet Service Provider because they can provide powerful server hardware, high speed connections and reliable server support.

Most providers have very fast connections to the Internet such as a full T3 fiber-optic (45 Megabytes per second) connections which is about 1000 high speed (56 Kilobytes per second) modems combined.

For those who are looking to set up their own servers and host their own websites, a personal computer is often not powerful enough to do the job. As the name suggests, a personal computer can hardly handle multiple visitors to your website- servers are needed to handle these visitors simultaneously.

Getting Your Web Hosting

There are thousands of companies that offer web hosting for your website. Which to choose and what to look out for? With the multitude of features and terms in each hosting plan, it can be puzzling for those who are just starting out. The golden rule in choosing your website: Nothing beats reliable web hosting. Many web hosting plans offer more space, more benefits than others. The decision to your web hosting should be based on reliability. We have seen too many disappointed website owners who chose benefits and space over reliability.

Budget Web Hosting - Are They All Created Equal?

Choosing a budget web hosting company can be overwhelming. In fact, choosing any web hosting company can be a challenge due, in large part, to the fact that there are so many of them. Do a search for "web hosting" with the quotes around the keywords on Google, and it'll return over 5 million documents! That doesn't mean there are 5 million web hosting providers but there very well could be at least 1 million! That's a lot of web hosts. How can you choose one that meets your need?

What is Budget web hosting anyway?

Budget web hosting is generally defined as any hosting service that is below $10 per month. The budget comes from the low price. Now, most companies in the budget web hosting category only offer one year plans. Most budget web hosting companies however, will quote you the monthly fee you would pay if you divided the annual fee by 12 months. Keep that in mind when you are comparing one company with another. The other thing to look out for is the setup fee. Do they charge you a setup fee to get started?

Evaluate your general impression of the company.

The first place to start evaluating budget web hosting companies is their front page. Does their website give you a sense that they are professional? Is it easy to find all of the information you need? Take a look at their contact information. Do they list a physical address, an email address and a phone number to contact them? If they don't provide any contact details, that has to throw up a red flag. If you run into problems setting up your website, and you have no proper contact information, how are you going to get service from that company?

Do they have a toll free support number?

Does the budget web hosting company provide a toll free number for you to contact them? If they are based in Atlanta, Georgia and you are in Seattle, Washington, you don't want to be paying long distance to them if you need to get them on the phone about a concern you have. A toll free number also speaks to their willingness to deal openly and honestly with their customers.

What kind of guarantee do they offer?

Choose a budget web hosting company that offers a good guarantee. Most budget web hosting companies don't openly publish their satisfaction guarantees. If you have to look in their terms and services agreement to find out where they stand with regard to giving you back your money if you are not satisfied, you should look elsewhere.

What is the uptime guarantee of the site in question?

Uptime guarantee refers to the amount of time the server is live and serving your web pages. An uptime guarantee of 99% means that the host guarantees that their servers will be up and operational 99% of the time. Over the course of one year, 99% uptime would represent a downtime (the one percent) of around 87 hours in a year or an average of 7 hours per month. An uptime of 99.9% would involve only 8 hours of downtime for the entire year.

What kind of after sale support can you expect?

While there are many other factors you could consider, the final one I will deal with is after sale support. What kind of resources do they make available for you. Find out if the budget web hosting company offers free scripts. Do they have any marketing tools they can make available to you? What kind of support for setting up your account can you expect from the budget web hosting company? All of these factors must be taken into consideration.

Just because a company offers a budget web hosting service, doesn't mean you necessarily have to compromise on features, quality or service. All three will only be found, however, if you make sure to do your homework to find a budget web hosting company that is a good fit for you.

Web Hosting Data Transfer: How Much Is Too Much?

Bandwidth in its simplest terms refers to the amount of data that flows across a network wire in a given time period. For most web hosting providers, that time period is measured in a month. Web hosting providers are charged a certain amount per month or per year for an allocated amount of bandwidth from backbone providers and wholesale data centers. That cost is then passed on to the consumer in the form of web hosting plans.

How much bandwidth will my website use?

With so much variation among web hosting companies, it can sometimes be difficult to know how much bandwidth your website will need. So, how much is a gigabyte of bandwidth anyway? Let's put it in perspective. If an average web page, images and all is 50 kilobytes in size, your website could be viewed 20,000 times! For the average hobby website, that is more than enough. Let's further put that 20,000 in perspective. If each visitor to your website viewed an average of 4 pages per month, it would still represent over 5,000 unique visitors to your website every month.

Beware of bandwidth usage when offering file downloads

While offering simple web pages doesn't use up much bandwidth, the same can't be said about downloading files. If you plan on allowing people to download music files, pdf files, flash files, or video files, you can eat up bandwidth in a hurry even with a relatively small number of people visiting your website. If your website offers an adobe .pdf file that is 1 megabyte in size, with one gigabyte of bandwidth, you will only be able to serve up one thousand downloads. This does not including the html needed to get people to download the pdf in the first place.

Video files eat up even more space. A one megabyte video file represents only seconds of video. For a half hour presentation, your video file could easily be over two hundred megabytes in size! At that size, one gigabyte would only allow you to offer five downloads to your visitors. What you plan to do with your website most definitely will affect how much monthly bandwidth you anticipate needing.

Overselling bandwidth is common in the web hosting industry

Because more people use only a fraction of their allotted bandwidth per month, most web hosting providers price their plans knowing that most people will only use a fraction of the resources available to them. In fact, with most companies, if you did use the maximum bandwidth available to you each month, you would most likely be shut down. If you go with a shared hosting account, your website can be hosted with hundreds or thousands of other websites. If your website starts to use a significant portion of the server's resources, you may find them pulling the plug on your website. If you know your website is going to need significant resources, you should probably consider getting yourself a dedicated server.

Knowing what you plan to do will allow you to know how much you need

By knowing what you plan to do with your hosting account, you can have a pretty good idea of how much bandwidth you're going to need. If you anticipate that you will be needing to serve lots of multimedia including video, music and large amounts of flash powered pages, you may need to consider going with a dedicated server. If your website is just starting out and you have little money and no real idea of how much bandwidth you're going to need, pick a company that gives you more than you think you'll need at a reasonable price. Make sure you also find out how much they will charge you for any bandwidth you use above and beyond what comes in your hosting package. If it is one dollar per megabyte and you've already exceeded a twenty gigabyte bandwidth limit, changes are, you'll get one hefty bill at the end of the month. When shopping around and looking at bandwidth, keep the overage cost in mind as well and you'll do fine.

How to Choose a Right Web Hosting Service?

Indeed, choosing a right web hosting service for your website is not an easy task especially when there are thousands of web hosting providers all offering almost identical web hosting packages. Therefore, it is important to know few major considerations even before you start your web hosting search. Below are three major criteria for web host seeker:

Web hosting features requirement

This is probably the most important consideration to start finding a host for your site. You need to decide the technical requirements for your website, this including:

a) Server platform and hardware requirements
If you plan to set up a website that uses programming environments such as Active Server Pages (ASP), Visual Basic scripts, Cold Fusion or Microsoft Access or Microsoft SQL database, in this case, you will need to find a web hosting service that supports Windows platform such as Windows NT or Windows 2000 servers.

Likewise, if you plan to use programming languages such as Perl, CGI, SSI, PHP or mySQL database, then any web hosting plans that support Unix/Linux platform should be sufficient to meet your hosting requirements. Once you have these server platform and hardware requirements in mind, you can decide the best web hosting plans for your need. For more information, you can read "How to select a web server and server platform?"

b) Disk space & Bandwidth requirement
Here is another technical requirement that you need to consider before selecting a web hosting plan, i.e. disk space and bandwidth. If you intend to publish a website that does not have a lot of contents (meaning, web pages), then the disk space requirement may not be a big concern to you. In general, a disk space with 200MB to 500MB should be enough to meet your hosting requirement. In contrast, if you plan to host a website with enormous amount of graphic pictures, mp3 or video files, then you should consider a web hosting plan that provide huge disk space, for example, 500 MB to 1,000 MB.

Similarly, the bandwidth requirement will depend on your site traffic estimation. Obviously, a website that expect to attract high traffic will consume the monthly bandwidth allowance very fast. If so, you will need to find one web hosting service that offer huge bandwidth with 40 GB to 100 GB per month. Depending upon your website requirement, choosing a web hosting service that provide sufficient amount of disk space and bandwidth is crucial consideration to prevent paying extra costs in the future should you overuse the monthly disk space and bandwidth allowance.

c) Other hosting features
While the above requirements are utmost important, there are other hosting features that you have to consider too. Can web hosting provider support video clips on your website, if you have? Is the web hosting service compatible with Dreamweaver or FrontPage web authoring tool? Do you plan to set up a virtual store online? Can the host support the e-commerce features without adding extra cost to your monthly payments? On top of that, you may also want to find out the number of email accounts provided, number of FTP accounts, web statistic software (analyze your web traffic), type of control panel supported (manage your web hosting account), database and scripting languages supported and etc.

Reliability and scalability

A first-class web hosting provider offers reliable server uptime and fast Internet connection. You should only choose a web hosting service that guarantee at least 99% server uptime with high-speed Internet backbones using at least OC3 (Optical Carrier) lines (155 Megabits per second) or above instead of T1 or T3 lines. A reliable web hosting provider usually invests heavily on their data center infrastructure with high performance servers, high speed multiple backbones providers with fail-over redundancy, backup power generators and firewall software protection in place to ensure they meet the uptime guarantee specified in the terms of service.

Similarly, you should choose a web hosting service with hardware facilities that designed for scalability, so that they can grow with your business. For example, if you need to increase more disk space, bandwidth or number of mySQL databases, you should be able to upgrade as needed without any problems.

Customer service and support

The last major consideration in choosing a web hosting service is to find a web hosting providers that offers excellent customer service and support. You should always search for a web hosting provider that offers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week technical support that fielded with highly experience technicians, so that any web hosting problems will be resolved within a reasonable amount of time. You may also want to consider to test how responsive is their customer support by sending few inquiry emails to the web hosting provider. In general, any response in less than 24 hours is considered acceptable. It is a sign of poor customer support if they take more than one day to response.

In addition, a web hosting provider with excellent support should also provide multiple support channels, such as toll-free phone support, 24/7 email support, live chat, online knowledgebase, Interactive flash tutorials and FAQ.

Above are few major considerations before you choose your web hosting service. In addition, how long has the web hosting provider in business and the number of customers that they currently have are also a good indication of the quality of their hosting products as well as the stability of the company. Even though cost of the web hosting service is also important but it should not be your major consideration. Because the price of a web hosting service has been declining over the years due to competition, as a result, the price of most of the web hosting services offering quality hosting features has been converging to less than US$10 per month. If you can't afford less than $10 per month, you probably isn't in the online business for the long haul. Therefore, price should not be a major deciding factor.

On the other hand, it is more important to ensure the web hosting service that you choose is able to meet your website hosting requirements, guarantee your website is always accessible with satisfying speed, provide scalability to grow and expand your website as well as offer excellent customer supports. Depending on your web hosting requirement, you can take advantage of our site, Cheap Web Hosting Review to find the recommended web hosting services that can match the three major criteria above. Good luck to your search.

4 Tips to Find the Web Host That's Right for You

So you have finally planned to invade the magical world of Internet. All captions ready, all information gathered, all details penned down. What next?

Your next important step is finding the Web Host for your site, The Right One..

A web host is a service provider that places your web site on a computer that is connected to Internet. This then gives people who surf Internet a way to access your website.

Finding the best host for your company's Web site is one of the most important steps when taking your business online. Not only will your host be responsible for placing your company's site on the Internet; it will also be responsible for keeping it there and being available to potential customers.

Now, let us take a look at the steps to be followed when choosing the right web host:

1. Create an online plan for your site. What you are going to sell, number of items, methods of payment and the features of your site. Then determine the possibilities for your site's expansion over the next six months, the next year and the next five years. Look into these factors before short-listing your probable host.

Disk Space/Storage refers to the amount of space given by a web-hosting plan for your web site's pages, images, and any additional files. Take this into consideration when determining the total number of files you will be using for your website and their sizes. If you are planning on creating a website with a lot of video or audio files, you will need a lot of disk space. Check whether your host can meet this requirement.

Programming Languages such as ASP, PHP, Perl/CGI, JSP and ColdFusion are used to create a lot of popular scripts (software) to help your website function. Make sure your web host supports the language used by you. Also, if you are planning on selling services or products from your website, make sure the web hosting plan you choose offers some type of ecommerce solution.

2. Now that you have checked out all your requirements, pick your top five responses. Surprisingly, many of the hosts you submit a request for a proposal to won't respond by your set deadline. Ignore them and look at the responses you receive and pick the five best.

3. Ask for references. Take your short list of hosts and ask them for the names of some of their clients -- then pick up the phone and see what the host's clients have to say. Be sure to inquire how good the host is at making the site available online.

4. Test their customer service. Pick up the phone and call customer support at 2 a.m. Drop customer support an e-mail to see how fast they respond to you. Do what it takes to feel comfortable with your service provider before you enter into any type of business relationship.

Choosing the right Web host is easier if you approach it the way you would approach any other major purchase for your business. It can mean the difference between success and failure for your online venture.

Is your web site hosting cost effective?

Choosing the right web hosting company is an important aspect in cutting your web hosting costs down. The web hosting industry, boosting several thousand web hosts, is still young and growing at a remarkable pace; hence finding the right host is not only difficult, but very time consuming; fortunately though it is worth the time and effort. There are a few things to keep in mind when exploring; when deciding to form a partnership with the host. Below are just a few things to consider, which directly attribute to final cost.

Bandwidth — Figure out approximately how much bandwidth (data transfer) your web site requires. As above, ensure you get more bandwidth than your site uses. For example, if your website uses 8GB bandwidth per month, then choose a plan, which offers at least 8 or 10GB bandwidth per month. This again will prevent 'spikes' of over usage, leading to higher extra costs. As a reference, an average web site should pay no more than $3 per GB for bandwidth usage.

Disk Space — Knowing how much web space your web site needs and compensating for a bit extra, for growth. For example, if your web site needs 200 MB of disk space, look for the plan which offers at least 250 to 300 MB of web space; this will prevent a large unexpected bill at the end of the month when high priced costs, charged by most web hosts for extra disk space usage, are added on to your bill. As a rule of thumb, an average web site should cost you no more than $1 per 10 MB.

Add On — Ask the web host if they have "Add-ons" facilities for purchasing projected extra disk space or bandwidth. But, be careful, if your web site needs only 2 GB extra bandwidth, you may have to buy an extra package in blocks of 5GB bandwidth; in this case, look for the host which will allow you to purchase extra disk space and bandwidth allowance as per your needs, this is crucial to cost savings

Caution: Ensure that you know the over-usage allowance rules; you need to know what happens if your web site uses more disk space or bandwidth than you have been allocated. The web host who informs you of possible over-usage well in advance, allowing you to take measures to reduce or budget for extra usage, is 'worth their weight in gold'.

No. of Web Sites — If you have more than one web site, sign up an account with a web host who provides multiple domains hosted on one account; this will work out a lot cheaper than an account per website. A good tip would be to ask your friends and colleagues if they want to host their websites with you on one account. For example at M6.net a person or persons with 4 websites can save roughly $20 per month by signing up an M6-2, multiple hosting account.

Databases and Scripting Support — Ensure that all the applications your web site uses (FrontPage, ASP pages, databases, cgi, PHP, etc.), are supported within the chosen account type. Find out if there are any extra fees for particular applications or associated database support. For example allot of hosts charge extra set-up fees to install FrontPage, which may be avoided by choosing another host offering the same features with no extra costs.

Mail Server — Emails are the lifeblood of your online business. Ensure that you get a sufficient number of email addresses with your own domain name (preferably unlimited); these are necessary for other email features like forwarders, and auto responders, etc. There is no need to pay an extra fee for use of a mail server as many hosts offer this service now for free, within the hosting plan.

Avoid Long Term Contracts — Many web hosts offer huge discounts on yearly or half yearly payments in advance, this may appear a good way to go, but note how long you are locked in. If possible avoid long-term contracts until you are sure about the services and reliability offered by that particular host. Paying on a monthly basis obviously has its benefits. If there are concerns with your service encouraging you to seek a new host elsewhere, you may lose out on many months of hosting fees when breaking a yearly or half-yearly contract; but, if the necessity arises, a loss of only a few days to close a troublesome account, is preferable.

Thinking ahead with reference to an established plan of action will help you avoid most surprises, and definitely help towards cutting costs, short term or long-term. Work out your growth rate and project future expansions. Keep a good record of past and present bandwidth and web space usage; this will help to project future needs.

Savings are mostly a matter of common sense, but in this industry of high technology most people forget this rule and try to look for the best, most efficient and most expensive technical programs and software to save them a buck or two. As in most businesses good cost effective groundwork is the best start to cutting costs.

The host with the most

Any e-business considering Web hosting is faced with a tough choice -- to co-locate or to outsource. Philip Hunter weighs up the options

Web hosting in one of its various guises should be considered by any enterprise embarking on e-business. The potential for cost savings and benefits through reaching customers and coming to market faster is huge, but there are also great risks. The principal danger is of choosing a Web hosting provider that is either unsuitable -- perhaps being unable to deliver the level of service you require -- or worse, about to go bust.

The dangers of the latter were demonstrated by the high-profile agonies suffered last year by PSInet, the company previously touted as the "Internet super-carrier", which is now threatened with bankruptcy. The problem with the Web hosting business is that to make it viable, major investment has to be made up-front in data centres, staff and network infrastructure, in the hope that the customers will then come flocking in.

Although rapid growth in Internet use continued through 2000 despite the dot-com debacle, PSInet suffered because it was over-ambitious in its projections and a little ahead of its time. Caroline Bryan, Web hosting analyst at Datamonitor, says, "It over-reached itself and sunk too much money into its IP network and datacentres, while the services did not take off quite as expected,"

This showed that size alone is no guarantee of success in the Internet service business, so the question is how can a potential Web hosting customer make sure it is entrusting its Internet shop window to the right provider. After all, in the case of full outsourced Web hosting, an enterprise might be relying on the service provider to collect a sizeable proportion of its revenue through e-commerce, as well as to deal with customers.

According to Bryan, hosting companies that have spun off from some existing large players in telecommunications or systems integration are better placed, because they have independent revenue streams and so rely less heavily on the goodwill and patience of their financial backers. The best UK example is BT Ignite, said Bryan, which although still losing money overall has a huge existing network infrastructure it can call on, as well as BT's IT solutions business Syncordia and its outsourcing company Syntegra.

This point is echoed by other analysts, such as consultant and analyst Ovum's ISP-watcher Henning Dransfeld. "ISPs with a telco background can leverage their telecom network and are in a good position to offer good quality of service," he says. This includes not only the big incumbent carriers such as BT, but also the likes of NTL with cable TV networks and in future others exploiting the unbundled local loop.

It can be argued that BT has over-reached itself with the huge investment in 3G mobile networks on which there will be no immediate return. There is also the little matter of the $1.25bn ([pound]8.5bn) it is spending jointly with US telecoms giant AT&T over three years in setting up the global network of at least 44 data centres for the Ignite Web hosting services. But the principal risk is of takeover rather than collapse, with hopefully less disruption to the hosting.

In any case, at least according to BT Ignite's vice-president of sales and marketing Perses Sethna, the company is on target to start making money on Web hosting by 2003. Some of the individual country businesses making up BT Ignite are already profitable, for example I.net in Italy, which recently had a successful initial public offering with BT retaining a 50.8% stake. But other Ignite businesses, including the UK operation, are still making significant losses.

Expansion

The Web hosting story began in the US with basic co-location services and has since expanded into more managed offerings, including up to full outsourcing and application provision. There is now a broad spectrum of services on offer, but most analysts assign these to just three categories.

For this reason, others such as Worldport only provide dedicated services. Few if any ISPs in the hosting business want to confine themselves purely to co-location because, as research director specialising in ISP issues at the Gartner Group Eric Paulak points out, it delivers a relatively poor return per unit of space and in locations such as the City of London, where property is expensive, it is only just viable.

Matching hosting providers to these categories is easier said than done, as suppliers are reluctant to admit that they are only in the co-location arena, even if that is all they are capable of providing. BT Ignite addresses the entire spectrum, but Sethna admits cheerfully that all their marketing effort is pitched at dedicated hosting because that is where the most money is to be made.

"If you look at the pricing for basic co-location within the UK, it works out at about [epsilon]100 ([pound]65) per square foot," says Paulak. This figure can be increased by perhaps 25% by offering some additional management, for example of the IP routers, but pales into insignificance when compared to the pickings that can be made with dedicated services.

The gulf is not difficult to estimate, As a rule of thumb, according to Paulak, a business-class hosting service with management will cost between [pound]100 and [pound]400 per user per month, depending on location and level of sophistication, with the average being around [pound]200. A typical Web server can handle 50 users and 12 such servers can be accommodated in a rack occupying nine square feet in a room. This equates to about [pound]10,000 per server per month, or [pound]120,000 per rack per month. Dividing by the nine square feet, this comes to about [pound]13,500 per square foot per month, which is a good 100-fold increase on what can be earned with co-location.

The result is that dedicated services are that much more expensive for customers, but when you put into the equation the cost of managing the facility and acquiring the necessary in-house IT skills, it may look more attractive. For a mid-sized company with 100 users, the cost of a dedicated Web hosting service would be [pound]240,000 per year on this basis.

So despite these costs, there is a strong swing in demand from co-location towards dedicated services, according to Sethna. But because of the huge cost differential, a number of larger enterprises that already have most of the human resources needed to run a Web site will at least start off with co-location to test the waters. To cater for this, many business sector ISPs, such as UUnet, will continue to offer co-location services for the foreseeable future, almost as loss leaders to lure customers into their Aladdin's cave of more lucrative services. As Bryan notes, "Web site hosting is one of the first things that a company is quite willing to outsource."

Dedicated services

Basic co-location is technically far easier to provide and is more of a vanilla service, with fewer differences between the contenders. But when it comes to dedicated services, some providers are more capable than others, both in their ability to offer the high levels of availability needed for e-commerce and in the range of options offered. BT Ignite, for example, can now go beyond full outsourcing of IT to embrace customer relationship management (CRM), "In this way we can provide not just the technology but surrounding services to get a company to market quickly," says Sethna.

This could appeal not just to end customers but also to aspiring application service providers (ASPs) which might have a sound proposition but not be geared up to handle CRM issues on behalf of its own customers. "So we are packaging this as a wholesale ASP offering," says Sethna. Some of the value-added services that a large player can bring embrace both IT and surrounding business issues. One is Web caching, which is particularly important for international multinationals, where a global enterprise might want localised content located close to the relevant customers for performance reasons. This in tarn requires the hosting company to have at least a satellite data centre in each country in which they operate.

But before getting carried away with value-added options, users should evaluate the ability of hosting companies to deliver maximum availability, says Worldport's vice-president of sales and marketing Frazer Hamilton. This cannot be achieved through resilient hardware and communications alone, but requires attention to the operating systems and applications as well. "For this reason we do not use a standard operating system," says Hamilton. "We harden the operating system to make it more secure, and also the applications." The essence here is to close unnecessary routes into the system that a hacker could exploit, using similar principles to those applied to military-grade software development. Now with large Web site hosting, there is a growing need for such hardened software in the commercial sector.

Another pressing need in Web hosting is better support for peering arrangements between providers. Progress is being made in basic connectivity to create faster transmission with better quality of service along end-to-end paths through the Internet, traversing the domains of multiple service providers. But what is lacking is the ability to retain information about content during such multi-ISP transmission.

"We think new content peering arrangements are needed to drive the industry forward," says Sethna. "We want to be able to swap content across the network and retain the intelligence and functionality so that, for example, information on the consumer is passed back to the source. Then an advertiser might be able to have granular information of who is looking at their content."

This may raise privacy issues, but that is another story. Without doubt though the next chapter in the hosting saga will address the content distribution question

Find the host with the most

No one can deny that the quality and reliability of your Web presence can make or break your business. The average attention span of a Web surfer is a mere 20 seconds, and your competition is always just a click away if load times and connectivity aren't fast, reliable, and browser-compliant. Support and back-end infrastructure are just as critical to your Website as aesthetic appeal. A gorgeous, multi-tiered graphical interface is useless if no one can get to it – and no one will try more than once. Like the stage and silver screen, you get one audition, and that's it.

For this reason, running your own server is a tempting prospect. You have total control, and can configure and reconfigure to your heart's content, without having to concede to bandwidth limits or third-party server failures. Even SOHO businesses can afford to purchase the industry-standard HTML editors, and no expensive hardware is needed to quickly create a Website. But opting to do it yourself without counting the costs and consequences can end your business, or cause your site to be dismissed as amateurish. While amateur construction is adequate for home or hobby sites, it is increasingly necessary to outsource your hosting needs if you wish to operate as an effective eCommerce vendor.

Quite simply, eBusiness doesn't end with the Website. Aside from handling the traffic that your site will attract, you need your server to maintain a constant connection to the Internet while simultaneously accommodating the needs of outside users. Few desktop PCs can handle such a load, and many home DSL and cable modem ISPs frequently prohibit hosting or any other high-bandwidth activities, which are so critical to eCommerce. Furthermore, there are the costs of site security, data backup, power back-up, redundancy, upgrades and transaction tracking to contend with, expenses that are far beyond the resources of even the wealthiest of small businesses. Furthermore, someone will have to constantly monitor and manage your infrastructure to ensure a constant level of connectivity, which will require the hiring of very expensive IT professionals.

A Web host will take care of all of this for you, for a monthly fee that is a fraction of the amount you would pay to purchase these services and hardware on your own. Many people are leery of turning control of their business over to a third party, and because of this unwarranted fear are dismissing the security and benefits that a host can provide. You are not outsourcing your business; rather, you are outsourcing the responsibility for keeping your business up and running. In the same way that a bricks-and-mortar warehouse hires security staff to watch the grounds, a Web host will keep a constant vigil over your virtual property, so you can focus on what's important: building your business.

Web hosts allow small businesses to play in the same arena as the corporate giants, giving them competitive bandwidth and traffic volume accommodation. Most importantly, your Web host will help you secure a domain name, something that most individual ISPs and free hosting accounts (such as Yahoo!) can't offer. Having a lengthy URL indicates that your business is hosted on a free server, and its amateur appearance will confuse your customers. Imagine the traffic that would be generated by a simple URL such as www.acmeflorists.com compared to www.yahoo.com/~128.hmpg/client2434/net~mypage/index_
acmeflorists!

But how do you choose a Web hosting service out of the hundreds that are available? You'll have to do some careful shopping to find the services and relationship you need, as the wrong decision can be disastrous.

When shopping for a Web host, connectivity and reliability are key. The longer it takes for customers to access your Website, the more likely you'll lose customers. Of course, no one's perfect. Connectivity time will fluctuate on a cyclical basis with the flow of daily traffic, but you should insist on a guaranteed connectivity rate of 95% when seeking a host. Aside from that, there are a few other issues to consider before making a final decision:

Look to the future

As your customer base and revenue grows, your site may require the addition of server-side scripting, eCommerce and database support, and a large bandwidth to accommodate audio and video streaming. Free hosting sites never offer these kinds of advanced features, but many commercial hosts don't offer them either. Make sure your host is big enough to accommodate your future needs, as well as your present ones.

Know thyself

On the other hand, don't empty your bank account paying for services you don't need.

The most basic level of service from a Web host typically positions your site among a number of others on a single machine, with a virtual domain name that points to the URL of your page. This is known as shared hosting, and is adequate for the simple "text-and-GIFs" variety of Website.

As your company grows, however, you will probably want to move from static HTML to incorporate more interactive elements into your site. Since this requires more bandwidth, you should probably move to a machine with more resources, and fewer sites vying for them. If you want to add streaming video, audio, or high-level graphics and forms to your site, your should probably switch to a dedicated server, which means having an entire machine to yourself. The host owns, maintains, and backs up the server while providing all the security, power management, and other aspects of maintaining a data center.

The highest level of service a Web host can offer is a Colocated Server. You own the hardware, but it's physically located at the host's facility. The advantage of this is that you can choose the bandwidth you'll need, while the host provides a clear pipe to the Internet. Unfortunately, it also means you'll have to pay for any and all security and firewall provisions, as you won't be protected by the host's firewall. While this gives you complete control over the level of security you desire, it can be quite expensive.

Demand prompt service and performance

The popularity of your site will be directly affected by your host's level of service. Slow load times due to an overburdened server will send your customers elsewhere. Furthermore, a long update-to-live lag time can be disastrous - especially if you have a large, constantly fluctuating inventory. For example, you may want to set up a special page for a new promotion, linked to the very expensive marketing campaign that your business is involved in. A few quick HTML entries are all that's required, but if you have to wait days for your host's IT staff to do the job, you could lose your marketing momentum and render the initiative useless.

No matter how renowned your host is, technical problems will occur. As such, demand 24-hour, 7-days-a-week technical support for all your applications. If a host claims to already offer this, check! Call their tech line at 3:00a.m. on a Sunday to see if anyone is really there. Ensure that there is some sort of written agreement regarding service, which ideally will provide you with financial compensation in the event of failure.

Security! security! security!

Ask for a detailed description of the hosting company's security protocols. They should provide adequate protection from everyday denial-of-service attacks and the various hacks and cracks that will be attempted on your server. Make sure that your host is responsible for upgrading and maintaining these measures - do you really have hours to spend hours reviewing server logs and updating software? The only thing worse than having no security is thinking you have some.

You get what you pay for

When shopping for a host, you'll find that they vary widely in terms of target and pricing. Some hosts skew their servers to accommodate many small sites, while others prefer to take on fewer, high-volume sites. If you inadvertently exceed the monthly "cap" on your site's permitted volume, you could quickly find that a little success can be your worst enemy, as your monthly fees make a significant jump. Be sure to strike a good balance between price and volume flexibility.

Don't commit right away

Many hosts will quote you a monthly fee, but bill in larger increments. You could sign on for a month, and find yourself promptly billed for a year's service. Ask about the billing period, and initially sign on for a small service term (60-90 days). If you're happy with the service after this trial period, extend the term.

Treat your Web host like you would treat any other supplier for your business. If they can't provide the service and reliability you need, why keep them? Their competitors will be happy to have your business.

Of course the service you will get from a host is important. But you should do some extra digging if you are to feel secure with your new host:

Master your apps

While a standard host with a large amount of disk space and a few fast machines is adequate for static HTML pages, certain sites will make greater demands on the host's CPU and will consequently run slower - and slow down every other site on the server as well. Streaming video and audio, discussion forums and message boards, online surveys, and high-level animation all require huge amounts of memory and fast access to the main server. If you can't afford a dedicated or colocated server, at least find one that has experience in integrating these more complex elements.

Don't be OS-tracized

Trying to put square pegs in round holes is ultimately futile, so let your applications be your guide. Don't assume that you need to use Windows NT to run your site with Frontpage extensions. Many applications created for Windows NT will actually be more efficient if they are rewritten for a UNIX environment. Don't worry about figuring this out yourself, but bear in mind that a host who offers both Windows NT and UNIX will be more flexible.

Don't make leaps of faith with your data

You probably have backups of your HTML data, as you created them locally and uploaded them to your host's server. But what about the other files? User logs, product databases, order tracking logs, server-side scripts, etc., probably only exist on your host's drives and could be lost in the event of a failure. Request the ability to back up these files.

Be master of your domain

Query the Whois database (www.whois.net) to ensure that your company is both the administrative and technical contact for your domain. If your host is listed as both of these contacts, it is the registrant of the domain, not you. Unless you are the registrant, your domain could be held for ransom if there is a dispute between you and your host.

Dealing with user complaints

Many hosts have a zero-tolerance policy with regard to spam and pornography, and don't always subject customer complaints to the proper scrutiny. As such, a customer complaint, regardless of its validity, could cause the plug to be unceremoniously pulled on your business. Find out what recourses are open to you, and if the terms are not acceptable, find another provider. Make sure your interests are protected as well as the host's.

Check references

You wouldn't hire a CTO without checking his or her references, would you? But that's what you'll be doing if you don't do a bit of digging before handing over your site to a host. Ask for a list of Webmasters who run similar sites off the host's server. Call them. E-mail them. Write them. If your host is unwilling to give you this list, go elsewhere.

Read their diary

There's nothing wrong with doing a little snooping to find out what type of people you are committing your property to. Query the Whois database and find the business address of the server. Use a tracing program to view the path to the machine in the Whois database. If another ISP's server pops up, chances are you're dealing with a reseller rather than an actual host. Check out the other sites on their server. If most of them are spam sites, banner click-through pages or porn sites, being associated with them could have a negative impact on your business.

Listen to other Webmasters

There are ways to discover what other professionals are saying about your host. Try the alt.www.webmasters newsgroup, and post the list about your potential host. It is a little time-consuming, but the investment is well worth it.

Accolades are meaningless

Ratings by various hosting "associations" are meaningless. While many members of the Web Hosting Guild are highly regarded companies, some are held in very low esteem by Webmasters. Ratings and awards can also be outdated, and might not reflect a host's current state of service.

Read the fine print

Make sure the terms and conditions of your service agreement are clear. Have a business lawyer review your contract before you sign. Carefully evaluate clauses that relate to copyright ownership, complaint protocol, fee renewals, and notification procedures regarding renewal or service discontinuation.

The bottom line is that you need a host to succeed in today's eCommerce world. But keep in mind that this still a world in its infancy, and is continually reinventing itself to suit the ever-changing face of eBusiness. As in any other market, you should expect constant change, improvement, and the occasional leap in performance or cost-effectiveness. As such, you must always be vigilant, and constantly evaluate the service you're getting, and what it's costing you. Remember, it takes years to build a reputation for your business and brand, and only two seconds to lose it.

Finding the right web hosting platform

First things first, any number of you who are new to the field of web hosting must be thinking ‘what is web hosting in the first place?’ Well then let us begin this article with some very basic facts about web hosting so you know exactly where you stand as regards the subject. Right then, web hosting is when your website is set up on a computer that is linked to the Internet. This computer is not too different than the computer you have at home however the defining difference between the two is that this computer is set up to serve websites to the internet and therefore it is suitably called “a server”. The web host has a very fast connection that can support the exchange of bytes to and fro from the Internet; it is engaged in placing thousands of websites on the Internet. Therefore, a web host quite literally rents out space to you where a server is placed that will place your website on the internet.

Very large companies have huge datacenters where hundreds of computers are kept to upload sites onto the internet, smaller companies do not own datacenters but they rent the space from larger companies. Some small companies can also rent the space from large companies and then rent that space further to other parties. There are hundreds of web hosting companies however knowing your own requirements will help you counter confusion in a huge market where it is easy to be confused with the variety available. Almost all web hosting companies have some features that are similar such as server type software which is the software used by server computers this can be Windows 2000 or Linux etc. The disk space is the space given to your website on the server. The bandwidth is the measure of how much traffic you are receiving, because every time someone visits your site that data is passed over the internet from the server or to the server.

There are different kinds of web hosting; the needs of your website must determine the kind you should opt for. Free web hosting does not require you to pay anything however it includes ads on the top of every page, it does not guarantee customer satisfaction, reliability and expects not to grow. Shared web hosting is the most common kind because it allows you to host the site with a minimal cost. You will pay a monthly charge and probably be one of the hundreds of sites on one server; you can increase the reliability by choosing a slightly more expensive plan. Another kind is dedicated web hosting where you have one server dedicated to your site, this is suitable for large e-commerce sites that get thousands of visitors per day. Collocated hosting is almost similar to dedicated hosting except you own the server and pay maintenance and bandwidth fee only.

Finding the right web hosting platform for you depends a lot upon the size of your website, the expected traffic and how much disk space you really need. Be realistic and careful when you buy a deal there are many deals that offer a lot even at low price but carefully determine exactly what you need and proceed accordingly.
